Today I am excited to share a hidden gem and one of my favorite places I’ve ever visited: a retreat in the middle of the jungle called: Kima Tulum.
After spending a week at the beach area in Tulum (the hotel strip), I was really looking forward to a more relaxing experience. Don’t get me wrong I really enjoyed staying at the beach area and being close to the coolest places. But after spending a week enjoying every party, my mind and my body were screaming for a retreat.
About Kima Tulum
I had the opportunity to stay in this beautiful retreat of only 4 rooms. Yes, you read this right only 4 rooms… I love the fact that is a very small and exclusive property.
It isn’t yet a year since Kima opened, so it’s literally a new property and not many people have heard about it, which (for now) makes it a true hidden gem.
It is only 8 minutes from the town and around 15-20 minutes from the hotels strip by car. If you are looking for a quiet place away from the madness of the hotel strip this would be the ideal retreat.
The owners of Kima are a French couple: Dorothee and her husband Enzo, and their cute baby named Leo. They started Kima when designing and constructing their own home and then they gradually expanded and turned it into this beautiful retreat!
Design and rooms
The property has a very minimalist, industrial look that made me fall in love with it. In fact, Enzo is responsible for most of the design of the retreat since he made many of the industrial furniture around the property with their own Kima Factory.
Dorothee and Enzo told me that the property was not built with photos in mind but it still seems to me that it is one of the most photogenic properties I have visited. Taking pictures here was a piece of cake!
One of the things that I liked the most is the natural light that comes in around the property in the day time.
All the rooms have a different but similar look. I stayed in room number two with a king bed. The rooms are super spacious and connect to a patio in the back with a view of the tropical jungle. The front part of the rooms are connected to the nice long pool.
Kima Tulum offers beautiful, nice common areas around the property. Around the gardens you will find many areas to sit with nice Acapulco chairs, traditional Mexican chairs, and pretty hammocks where you can enjoy the beautiful sounds and views of nature.
Food
Kima Tulum only offers breakfast and this has been one of the most delicious, freshest and photogenic breakfasts I have tasted! I have stayed in many hotels but the truth is that the quality of breakfasts offered by this place is exceptional! From fruits, avocado toast, smoothies, acai bowls, etc. Just judge the pictures!
You can enjoy this delicious breakfast from the comfort of your room, on the patio, by the pool, the dining room, etc. Wherever you decide, believe me you will enjoy it!
As for the rest of the meals this is something that each guest must take care of! However Kima has a huge list of restaurants to recommend or you can choose from a number of places who do delivery!
Activities
Kima is the perfect place for couples, solo travelers or even families who want a place to relax or who need a base to explore Tulum.
There’s so many activities that you can do around Tulum so I have made a complete guide here.
However while you are staying at Kima Tulum there are some that I would especially recommend doing:
- Visit Cenote crystal and escondido: both are super close to the property by only 15 mins walking. If you have a bike or a rental car they are also a super short distance as they are on highway 37 at the entrance of the Kima Tulum. This has an approximate cost of $5 – $6 per person.
- Pilates with Adele: This was something that I would have loved to do from day one after arriving but I eventually tried it on my last day! Adele is a super nice Australian girl who gives private lessons in Tulum and one of the places where she gives them is in this retreat. To be honest I had never done Pilates and my first experience was here in Kima with Adele. Thanks to her, I continued practicing Pilates. She made me feel very comfortable and made my first experience so enjoyable that thanks to her it instilled Pilates into my life!
I want to thank Dorothee and Enzo for receiving me in their hidden gem and for all the attention while I was staying here. It was a pleasure to meet you both and I hope our paths cross soon.
Love
Marcy
