Como muchas personas mi impresión de África nació cuando vi por primera ves la película el Rey León cuándo estaba muy niña, y a través de los años mi impresión fue mejor educada por mis clases de historia y geografía en la escuela, documentales de vida silvestre, muchas películas rentadas de Blockbuster, noticias y algunos libros que llegue a leer a través de los años.
Para ser sincera visitar África siempre estuvo en mi bucket list y la verdad jamás pensé cumplir uno de mis sueños tan pronto y sobre todo por un tiempo tan prolongado ya que llevo así 2 meses y medio por África del Este. Ir de safari no es una actividad como ir cualquier fin de semana a la playa que se puede ir en cualquier momento. Hacer un safari es una experiencia única e increíble que por eso me he dedicado tanto tiempo en explorar junto a Robert esta increíble región. Les pido disculpas anticipadas si creen que los estoy abrumando con tantos destinos de safari jejej pero la verdad esto es una experiencia tan linda que no me gustaría dejar de compartirlas con todos ustedes.
Para continuar nuestra aventura en MagicalKenya esta vez nos fuimos a visitar la casa de los leones en el Parque Nacional Meru. Este es el país del león y del elefante, pero también Meru tiene muchas otras especies incluyendo el búfalo, caracal, hipopótamos y rinocerontes.
Robert y yo estábamos muy emocionados de visitar este parque no solo por ver leones si no también por que sabíamos que iba a hacer un destino súper emblemático por ser el famoso escenario de Joy y George Adamson en los años 60 cuando escribieron un libro sobre sus experiencias con “Elsa” su leona amada. El cual se convirtió en la famosa película «Born Free» protagonizada por Virginia McKenna y Bill Travers ; una película innovadora siendo la primera en representar a los animales salvajes como criaturas entrañables. Para nosotros era súper emocionante poder vivir en carne propia la inspiración de esta bella historia.
Elsa’s Kopje parte de la cadena Elewana Collection fue el lodge donde nos hospedamos el cual está en el corazón del parque, en la pequeña colina rocosa de Mughwango que ofrece vistas de 360 grados. Debajo de la colina estaba el sitio de campo de George Adamson, y la colina era el patio de recreo de Elsa la leona. Cada cabaña está diseñada alrededor de las rocas, con un dormitorio grande, sala de estar abierta, terraza, baño espacioso y con un jacuzzi en la terraza, cada una con vistas impresionantes al Parque nacional Meru donde claramente se pueden observar grandes manadas de elefantes, búfalos y jirafas hacer su camino a través de las llanuras.
La verdad es que cada una de las propiedades de Elewana Collection que hemos visitado han sido increíblemente únicas en cuanto a su estilo, diseño y locación. Sin duda Elsa’s Kopje fue una de nuestras favoritas ya que las cabañas fueron diseñadas perfectamente según su alrededor para que realmente se adapte a la naturaleza. Todo el tiempo sentimos que vivíamos en una enorme roca con todas las facilidades de un hotel 5 estrellas.
Una de las cosas que realmente disfrutamos mucho fue el increíble servicio y la comida, sobre todo en cuanto a variedad en el menú. Tomando en cuenta que muchos de estos lodges están en medio de nada pero la comida nunca fue un problema en ninguna de las propiedad de Elewana Collection. Si hay algo que puedo decir que siempre busco en un hotel es: una tina, wifi, café, y variedad en el menú (sobre todo en el desayuno), spa. Todas estas cualidades sobrepasaron mis expectativas ya que Elsa’s Kopje cumplió mucho mas de lo que esperaba.
Desde cualquier esquina Elsa’s Kopje se pueden apreciar las increíble vistas que sin duda una de las cosas que Robert y yo disfrutamos hacer fue disfrutar de estas vistas con un rico picnic que nos preparo el chef para saborear los platos nacionales que estaban excepcionalmente ricos. Solo juzguen mis fotos!! (se me hace la boca agua con solo de volver a recordar este momento)
El parque tiene un santuario de rinoceronte de 84 kilómetros cuadrados que alberga a más de 60 rinocerontes blancos y negros que es uno de los animales con mayor peligro de extinción en el mundo. El área es tan grande que encontrar el rinoceronte todavía puede ser un reto pero increíblemente para nosotros no lo fue que la verdad en este viaje hemos sido increíblemente suertudos (es algo que siempre nos dicen nuestros guías/choferes).
Cuando vas de safari realmente no esperas ver todos los animales en un solo día, para esto hay que tener mucha paciencia, tener un buen conductor y guía que conozca el área pero sobre todo levantarse muy temprano. Cuando digo temprano es 5am para ser exacta jajaja que es lo que hemos hecho en todos nuestros safaris y tengo que admitir no soy muy mañanera y por mas que me haya costado levantarme cada safari ha valido totalmente la pena ya que ni siquiera el ojo de la cámara explica que es verlos en vida real. Los safaris en la mañana siempre resultan mejor ya que tienes mas probabilidades de ver los animales sobre todo en Meru que puede ser extremadamente caluroso ya que los animales suelen esconderse con este clima.
Nuestro ultimo día en Meru que fue el cuarto día decidimos hacer otro safari a ver si teníamos la suerte de ver los rinocerontes y increíblemente pudimos verlos. De hecho era la primera vez que Robert y yo los veíamos en Kenia y sobre todo verlos en en vida real así que para nosotros fue una satisfacción inexplicable poder ver estas lindas criaturas.
Si alguno de ustedes llega a visitar el hogar de los leones en este parque nacional Meru el costo es de 52$ por persona y por día.
