Many of my friends and family have always known me as the Marcy who does not take risks and always goes for the secure plan. The Marcy who does not really like to do excursions or outdoor activities, or the one who does not camp, and the list continues hahaha but my point with this is that although many of these things are true, since last year I felt I needed to do something else in my life.

Having the job of my dreams and earning a few thousand dollars was exactly how I wanted to see myself in the future. But the truth is that I realized that money and professional satisfaction do not buy happiness, but rather the more you have the more you want to get, to the point that you do not enjoy life because of being focused on your daily responsibilities. That’s exactly how I found myself it in this situation almost 4 months ago when I asked myself if I should continue to pursue my professional success, or to just grab my bags and go explore new places.

Having made the decision to continue to explore the world I was led to discover a new Marcy, and I have to say that I am still in the process of discovering who I am hahaha but until now it’s been one of the best decisions of my life and part of this is that now I’m more willing to do more adventures and see things from a very different perspective. Now my life has changed a lot to how it used to be and instead of enjoying it in the gym like before, my gym is to make trips to discover hidden gems around the world or riding bikes in the cute little towns around Africa.

When I got the opportunity to go to Africa, it was never in my plan to climb Kilimanjaro. Many people think I actually planned in advance but the truth is that from the 3 suitcases I brought on this trip I only had one gym look and believe me to climb Kilimanjaro it takes more than that! We first thought we could climb Kilimanjaro when we went to explore Kenya at our first destination – Tortilis Camp in Amboseli. This destination boasts the most breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro even more so than from Tanzania itself.

I remember Robert and I thought we should climb Kilimanjaro when we go to Tanzania (which was actually in our plans). We expected to be in Tanzania by mid-December and to explore Serengeti first, then to hike Kilimanjaro for Christmas or new year. We thought starting the year with a great adventure would be perfect.

We began planning Kilimanjaro 15 days before New Year, when we realized that people and travel agencies usually plan Kilimanjaro a year in advance so they thought we wanted to do it for the new year of 2018! Just imagine their reaction when we told them that we wanted to do it in 15 days hahaha.

We really thought we were not going to make it because all tours were set long ago. In fact we had no luck with any of the agencies we had called. At the last moment, our Elewana Collection family told us about Summit Africa (@adventureinternational) who offered a top-of-the-range VIP tour.

So we contacted them and they were quick and efficient to respond, and very professional. We were thinking to make the peak for the night of the 1st, but joined an 8-day climb that would reach the top on January 2nd. So suddenly Robert and I had our great adventure all set to climb Kilimanjaro.

To tell you a bit about Summit Africa they offer a VIP tour to the top of Kilimanjaro. Have you ever wondered what it is to do a luxury camping? This is defined as a walking tent per person, a hanging cot bed (so no sleeping on the floor) with super warm sleeping bags, a private shower, a private bathroom, a personal chef, a main mess tent as a living room and dining room, and fresh food. The crew is an amazing 24 people who accompany you, combining your two guides, the chef and the guys who are in charge of carrying your bags and the whole camp. 24 people?? Sounds too much when you know that we were only 3 people (Jennifer, a California woman who originally set up the tour, Robert and I). But really for the logistics and comfort that Summit Africa provides you with, all the staff is necessary to make sure no-one is overloaded.

This tour is valued at approximately $ 5,000 (US dollars) per person excluding park fees and gratuities. Choosing the right agency is a big deal and is vital for anyone who climbs Kilimanjaro. You must also take note that tipping the staff is also a big deal. This usually depends on the number of people in the group but the agency always gives a recommendation of the estimate.

As for the costs of the park these depend on the route you take. There are about 7 different routes and all have different duration of days. However, the costs of the park are the same for all, only the price varies since you pay per day, but this is an approximate amount of costs:

Rescue tax: $ 20 (US dollars) and this is only payable once

Conservation tax: $ 70 per day (US dollars)

Camp tax: $ 60 per night (US dollars)

When we arrived in Arusha, a popular town near Kilimanjaro, the agency came to our hotel a day early to give us a review of the route, and they were extremely professional. They explained everything from head to toe, the route with a map, the recommendations of what to take as extras, the recommendations for the tips for staff, and even brought that day all the equipment that we were going to rent. We had to rent almost 95% of everything because unlike most hikers, we had almost nothing with us.

Initially for Kilimanjaro I wanted to make the Coca-Cola route, which is the shortest route for 5 days, however Summit Africa recommended us to make the Lemosho route which is 8 days. And I have to be sincere after having lived the experience and having made the route I thank God that I did not take the shortest route. As fast as you want to finish, what suffers is your body as it gets super tired due to lack of oxygen at altitude and the odds of not achieving it are high if you are a person like me who did not prepare or train for this.

The Lemosho route is the best and in fact one of the most recommended since it is slow but does not require so many hours of walking per day. The purpose of this is a little more relaxed since the main idea is to let your body get used to the altitude. The peak is 5,800 mts high so it is important that the body gradually adjusts to the environment. Many people according to their body react differently with altitude and in my case I never suffered anything until the 7th day when I got a headache. But many people find it hard to breathe, throw up, get a fever, etc .. The key is to drink a lot of water non-stop all day, and to go pole pole (which means to go slowly!).

To explain more detail of the Lemosho route here are the details of the schedule and length per day:

Days: 8

Total hours hiking / climbing: 45 hours

Total of Camps: 8

Day 1: Lemosho to Shira I a total of 4 hours

Day 2: Shira I to Shira II a total of 5 hours

Day 3: Shira II to Moir a total of 5 hours

Day 4: Moir to Lava Tower a total of 4 hours where we stop for lunch and then we continue 4 more hours to get to Barranco

Day 5: Barranco to Katanga a total of 4 hours

Day 6: Katanga to Barrafu you start with 6 hours then you relax all day to rest for the climb to the peak at midnight

Day 7 midnight: Barrafu to Uhuru peak a total of 6 hours

Day 7 morning: this day you start descending at 6:00 am to the same camp Barrage which take around 3 hours where you actually rest a few hours to continue descending that same day to the next camp called Mweka. This day is very intense

Day 8: You wake up in Mweka to continue descending to the exit of the park which takes around 4 hours

One of the most asked questions was if I prepared to climb Kilimanjaro? And I have to say no and to be honest it was one of my biggest worries especially knowing that our teammate Jennifer had prepared much time in advance with a personal trainer. So I was very afraid of failing and not achieving it, but the key is to maintain a positive attitude and above all to have people who encourage you to do it and this I owe a lot to Robert and the guys from Summit Africa who every day they supported me and gave me good vibes to follow. Part of this experience that I really loved was the singing and dancing of the crew. Every day in the different camps they were waiting for us with the camp perfectly set up and cheered us up on arrival with a Kilimanjaro song.

Most of the routes each day were tiring but not too difficult, but what made it more difficult for us was the rain which with nature you can never predict. Actually for me the most difficult was one of the last days, on the first of January at midnight when we left to the final climb to the peak. In fact many people do not know but I almost did not make it. About 200 meters from the top I sat down to cry because I could not stand the pain of my feet. It was not due to altitude, nor the cold (although I had 5 layers up, and 5 layers down) but I simply could not stand the pain of my feet and my first reaction was to sit down. My guide Godfrey immediately came to grab me and I had to get up to continue as it is one of the worst things I could do being so high in low temperatures to sit down. My body may have been paralyzed. But thank God I had professional people who guided me and pushed me to continue and do the right thing to get to the top and finally witness my first dawn of 2017 and be for my first time high above the clouds.

Seeing the dawn of January 2 is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my life. Being above the clouds is something really magical that not even the photos could explain that feeling. Feeling proud of yourself and being able to say “I did it” is one of the most gratifying feelings that life can give us.

It is recommended to be up top only 15 minutes-30 minutes at maximum and no more than that because the cold is not really good for the body. When we started descending I was struck by everything we had climbed from midnight in the dark, because when you descend it is already daylight and you can appreciate the landscape and all that you have climbed. In fact, the descent felts like eternity more than the climb. Ii is very difficult and a little bit dangerous for the knees. I recommend you be very careful and do it super slow with your guide.

I know this post is a bit long but I would like to give you my recommendation of what you should carry. Make sure you have all the right clothes to climb if you go with an agency they will provide you with a specific list of what you need but among the most important is:

Thermal hat for cold

Sunglasses: make sure not to forget this on the day to the peak because this will help you with the reflection in your eyes of the snow

Scarfs

Water bottles 2 x 2 liters (make sure they can resist boiling waters to freezing water)

Pants, jackets, gloves, backpack, hat all waterproof: make sure all are very good quality and they can support long hours in the rain so nothing from your inside gets wet. In our case we only had one set of everything and since it was raining a lot we had a hard time to dry these for the next day

Water proof waist bag: you will need it every day to keep your most important essentials

Camel back: make sure is also water proof and that the laterals have a section so you can put both of your water bottles

Several sweaters

Pajamas make sure to bring your warmest ones

Dry fit clothes: you will be constantly moving so having dry fit will be much better and make sure to bring several dry fit looks

Thermal gloves: a thin inner glove that can fit inside the waterproof out glove

Thermal underwear

Lightweight trousers not jeans

6 pairs of socks (thin and hiking socks 6 of each)

Water proof hiking boots

Spare shoes for in the camp

Headlamp and spare batteries

Sun screen: do not forget this the day of the peek because the sun is very intense specially when you are descending. I met some people that forgot their sunscreen and they had scars from the sun

Walking Poles

Shower towel and small towel: always keep the small one in your backpack

Lip bomb: make sure to always keep this one in the waist bag and make sure to bring spare one in case you lose one.

Vaseline: specially is a small recipient to keep always with you.
