Things to do in Nairobi, Kenya

Finally I’m sharing my diary from Nairobi, Kenya. As many of you know I spent almost a month exploring Kenya in November last year. But during that month I almost never stayed in the city since I was always in other regions of the country on safari. In March of this year I had the opportunity to return to this wonderful country and spend a few days in the capital of Nariobi with my incredible family of Starwood Hotels for the inauguration of their new hotel: Four Points by Sheraton, Nairobi Hurlingham.

The hotel is very modern, with an excellent location in the city. The breakfasts are incredibly delicious – especially their elephant pancakes. It also has a coffee shop where we spent most of the time when we were at the hotel. It has an incredible gym where you can burn off those yummy breakfasts. The best views of the city can be seen from the rooftop where the pool is located, as well as another restaurant called Mezze on the Deck and access to the sky bar called Level 8.

Many people think that in Nairobi there is not much to do and they only go to the city to reach the rest of the country. So I would love to be able to share a quick guide to the things you should do if you ever get to visit Kenya and at least make sure you spend a few days in the city:

  1. Visit the Giraffe Center: You won’t want to leave here since the giraffes are super friendly. You will have the opportunity to feed them and take pictures with them. Salma is one of the friendliest giraffes!
  2. Visiting the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage: a super cute experience that has been well received worldwide through its successful elephant rescue and rehabilitation program. The project offers hope for the future of Kenya’s elephant population where they give them a home, care for them and feed them.
  3. Visit the Jamia Mosque: Really one of the most prominent and important religious structures of the country with a very beautiful architecture. If they are going to visit this mosque you have to take into account to dress appropriately.
  4. Kitengela Glass House: for lovers of art and nature certainly something that will fascinate you with incredible artwork made of glass that you can buy or even hang out in a their cute little cafe (make sure to watch out for the monkeys since they can steal your food). Definitely the best views are from the rooftop of the main glass house and you cannot miss the suspension bridge.
  5. African Heritage House: the most photographed house in Africa and certainly a very beautiful experience. Not only did we have the opportunity to meet the owner who gave us a tour, but the design and architecture is truly amazing including every single artwork piece in the house. Mr. Allan is one of the few persons I have had the pleasure to meet that have such a fascinating life. If yo visit this house I would recommend you grab the package where they provide dinner at the house.

6. KICC Rooftop: If you are looking for stunning views from the city this is the place where you can get those pictures. This is is a 28-story building located in the City Square of Nairobi. It is an internationally renowned venue for conferences, meetings, exhibitions and special events within walking distance of several five star hotels.

7. Take a helicopter ride to Mt Kenya: the views of the city are amazing and you can fly out over the countryside too. Have lunch at Fairmont Mt Kenya which has a super delicious lunch and after that you cannot miss visiting the animal orphanage too.

So there you have it, if you are visiting Kenya you cannot miss visiting the city of Nairobi and if you are looking for a good hotel definitely Four Points by Sheraton Hurlingham is one of the best options. In fact, by the end of Oct-Nov, they will be opening a new hotel at the airport too!

xoxo
